A Disappearing Number

  • Has anyone seen the new Complicit production Shun-Kin? I saw it on Saturday and was left a little under-whelmed - perhaps it was unfair to compare it to the superlative previous two production I had seen by the company before - the above mentioned A Disappearing Number and The Elephant Vanishes.
  • Hi Phil, thanks for your comment. I haven't seen the production but I've heard good things about it from friends who saw the Tokyo production. What was it about the show that made you feel under-whelmed?
  • Hi Andrew,
I realised that I didn't offer much explanation for my under-whelm-ment (if that makes sense). The production had a haunting quality and was clearly attempting to tell a story very differently to what Western audience expect - plot, dialogue etc. As it reached the ended I started to buy into that, as well as to some degree the characters, who until then were pretty elliptical. It just seemed to take a long time to get there. And apart from some striking visual touches, and use of great music, for me it drifted. Perhaps that was the point.
    Phil
