Judy Jacob and The Rain Emperor

Director of The Rain Emperor, Judy Jacob talks about the background to the project and the musical legacy of her late father, Robert Jacob.

This video takes a behind the scenes look at an exciting east London site specific performance project, based on the musical legacy of renowned and unsung composer/musician Robert Jacob. Jacob was known amongst peers as “The Rain Emperor” for his infatuation with the character of rain; and this production, directed by his daughter, Judy Jacob, brings together multiple artists from across a range of styles and practices to create an original and immersive performance experience at the Village Underground in Shoreditch, London.

The Rain Emperor will be on from the 26-28th February 2009. For more information and to book tickets see The Rain Emperor website.

  • Hi Judy,
Great to watch you and here how Robert's Work has come to life after his passing in 2005.
I was at school with Robert and only after leaving the sixth form did we get together and play music. Our last gig as 'Megaton' was at Kingston Poly (now Uni).
I met up with Robert, and another school pal Ian, in 2004. We planned to meet again.....sadly that did not happen.
Best wishes with all your future productions
    Yours sincerely
Paul Anderson (known as Paul MacGranthin back in the 70s)
  • This is a great video, I just got round to watching it again and it has some lovely shots Andrew, well done.

I realised watcing it back that I forgot to mention DJ Shorty (Sat Bansal), a scratch DJ, and one of the founder members of the naked sunday collective with my Dad. He is a close friend of mine and played a huge part in getting the Naked Sunday collective started.

Having not prepared answers to the questions in advance I knew there would be something/someone I forgot to mention whilst wittering on in such a sleep deprived state that evening, so thought i'd leave a comment to make up for it.
  • Thanks for that Judy. So what was the general outcome of the production? Is there any plan to develop it further? What's next for you at the Village Underground?
